Classification and common specifications of truck length
1. Truck length standards classified by load
According to the "Motor Vehicle Specifications and Terminology", trucks are divided into four categories according to load, and their length standards are as follows:
Mini truck: Vehicle length less than 3.5 meters, total mass less than 1800kg.
Light truck: Vehicle length less than 6 meters, total mass less than 4500kg (such as 4.2-meter models, load ≤5 tons).
Medium truck: Vehicle length ≥6 meters, total mass 4500kg~12000kg (such as 6.8-meter, 7.6-meter models).
Heavy truck: Vehicle length ≥6 meters, total mass ≥12000kg (such as 9.6-meter, 13-meter, 17.5-meter models).
2. Common Truck Length and Uses
The following are the mainstream truck length specifications and applicable scenarios in logistics transportation:
4.2 meters: short-distance urban delivery, load ≤5 tons, compartment volume ≤13 cubic meters.
6.8 meters/7.6 meters: medium and short-distance transportation within the province, load 10~12 tons, compartment volume 40~45 cubic meters.
9.6 meters: long-distance transportation, load 16~18 tons, compartment volume ≤60 cubic meters.
13 meters/17.5 meters: ultra-long-distance freight, load 30 tons, compartment volume 75~120 cubic meters (17.5-meter models are mostly used for flatbed transportation).
3. Special models and restrictions
Semi-trailer: Ordinary flatbed semi-trailers are up to 13 meters long, and low-bed semi-trailers are no more than 13.75 meters.
Risk of illegal modification: Unauthorized extension of a truck (e.g., from 13.95 meters to 16.2 meters) can lead to safety hazards and penalties.
Traffic restrictions: Some cities (e.g., Jinhua) impose restrictions on trucks longer than 6 meters, but vans may be exempted.
4. Brand and model differences
Light trucks (e.g., Iveco, Jiangling) are usually 5-7 meters long, while heavy trucks (e.g., Scania, Mercedes-Benz) can reach 10-14 meters.
Flatbed trucks come in a variety of lengths (9.6-17.5 meters) and are suitable for transporting large equipment.
